Addressing Flooding in Low-lying Areas: An Urgent Mission in Florida

Florida, June 2 – The recent rains in the municipality of Florida have revealed a worrying situation regarding flooding in low-lying areas of the city, a persistent problem that demands immediate attention and new strategies from Civil Defense and other agencies in anticipation of the start of the 2026 Hurricane Season.

It is striking that just 15 or 20 minutes after the rains began, ditches and canals overflowed into the streets due to poor drainage and the obstruction of bridges and culverts, causing runoff water to flood numerous homes in the Morales neighborhood, in the Centro Urbano district, and in other parts of the city of Florida.

As is widely known, the lack of resources of all kinds prevents the immediate implementation of large-scale projects, demanded for over 10 years, to clean the stormwater drainage system in the residential area. However, other types of actions are necessary, requiring human effort and public support.

The accumulation of small dumps and debris, even in canals and other city conduits intended for rainwater runoff; clogged bridges; heavy weed growth on sidewalks and curbs; and the blockage and destruction of the sewer system are among the causes of flooding in neighborhoods and low-lying areas with poor drainage in the urban environment of the municipality of Florida.

Prevention is better than cure; preparedness and vigilance, timely training and information, and creative resilience with innovative solutions are principles and practices to be strengthened during the most challenging hurricane season the country has ever faced, given the scarcity of resources, the accumulation of tasks, and the lack of compassion from our imperialist neighbor.
