Florida, May 30.- In the municipality of Florida it was agreed to name the facility where the Ibarra team is located Leidys Oquendo Valdésa Sports Court, in honor of the memory of the outstanding basketball player, who died in October of last year.
The decision transcended this Sunday in an extraordinary session of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, where Sports authorities in the territory reported that the act of official appointment is expected to take place in the middle of next June at the facility located on Carretera Central, between Lambarry and Egusquiza streets.
It is an eternal tribute to a glory of Cuban basketball, since Leydis Oquendo was a member of the national teams for more than 16 years and participated in the world championships in Brazil 2006 and Turkey 2014.
As an athlete and member of the Cuban women’s basketball team, she also won the Central American and Caribbean games twice, and the Centro basketball tournament five times.
The Florida athlete died in October of last year in the Salvadoran nation, where she was fulfilling a contract in the Professional Women’s Basketball League in that country, a tournament in which she was crowned champion and was the most valuable player three times.
