Florida, February 27, 1874 – It was on February 27, 1874 when the independence fighter Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y López del Castillo, lawyer and owner of the Demajagua sugar mill, died in combat at Finca San Lorenzo, in the Sierra Maestra, becoming a political-military leader on October 10, 1868 when he proclaimed his determination of independence or death and freed his slaves, which was the first official act of Cuba as a nation.
