Florida, August 5.- The lack of organic matter and intermittent electricity availability are currently limiting the productive capacity of the organic farm located in the rural community of La Vallita in the municipality of Florida. This site is linked to Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture, with food obligations for the institutions and people in its surroundings.
Although the site, protected by the Antonio Briones Montoto Agricultural Production Cooperative (CPA), is close to several livestock farms, the staff there stated that they lack manure or any other natural fertilizer available to cover the 16 flowerbeds currently inactive in the horticultural facility.
During a visit to the site, beans and spinach were seen growing only in a small area of the agricultural facility, which also impacts the income they generate to pay the workers.
The rehabilitation of the La Vallita rural community’s organic farming system, based on a stable supply of organic matter and the implementation of an irrigation strategy, could become a reliable source of fresh vegetables, greens, and condiments for the community, and a necessary resource for social institutions in the region, such as the Nursing Home and the Family Care System, among others.
