Florida, Oct. 29 – With more than 630 farmers and land users dedicated to rice production, the municipality of Florida has the necessary potential to cover the demand for this item in the standard family food basket for all the inhabitants of the territory.
However, such purpose conceived in the local project for the implementation of the Food Security and Sovereignty Law is still far from being achieved, taking into account the resource limitations, the deficiencies in state contracting and the lack of order in the harvesting and commercialization of the cereal.
According to preliminary data, the rice quota for the year for the more than 60 thousand Floridian consumers requires around 2,270 tons of the grain, which, based on an organized and conscientious work strategy with governmental support, could be obtained here in the short or medium term.
Import substitution and foreign exchange savings for the country under the current conditions are sufficient reasons for producers to plant with greater awareness, motivation and support in the rice fields, in search of the economic independence and nutritional security demanded by Cuba and its people in the face of the genocidal blockade of Yankee imperialism.
