The loss of labor in traditional and sugar agriculture, cultural uprooting and depopulation of the countryside are today, from the human point of view, the main consequences of the growing migration of rural inhabitants to the capital city of the municipality of Florida.
Although there are no updated figures on the phenomenon, a tour of the local sugarcane and agricultural settlements and discussions with their inhabitants reveal a reality that endangers agricultural development plans, food sovereignty and the economic progress of the territory.
Among the problems raised by different managers in the productive base of the sugar sector, the lack of human capital to plant sugarcane and other crops stands out, a reality also marked by the migration of those who must take on these tasks.
Although in Florida there is talk of priorities in the attention to rural communities, the hypothesis demands greater action if we want to stop the displacement of families from there to the city and other urban destinations in the current situation.
José Martí said it: «cities are the soul of nations, but their heart, where they are crowded and where their blood flows, is in the fields», so let’s do everything possible to prevent rural Florida from running out of labor force.
