Florida, Nov. 8 – The world continues, without a doubt, with its feet upside down, and to the occurrence of unthinkable phenomena for these times, such as the continuation of Israel’s massacre against the Palestinian people and the impotence of the United Nations to stop it, is added right now the undisputed victory of Donald Trump in the presidential race in the United States and his imminent return to the Oval Office of the White House.
For a part of the inhabitants of the earth who are aware of how much politics and the interests of power matter in the current life of the planet, this news came as a bucket of cold water; another segment celebrates the return of the egocentric tycoon still accused of multiple crimes, while the rest of the inhabitants of the globe do not have accurate information, or are not interested in knowing what happened in the battle for the iron throne in the North American empire.
Regardless of the opinions of analysts and motivations of the northern electorate to turn their vote and offer a second term to the most unpredictable and controversial president of the United States, the truth is that nobody, or almost nobody, can assure what this prince of arrogance and haughtiness will really do in the foreign and domestic policy of the country when he takes the reins of government, after his swearing in on January 20, 2025
Some dare to predict that Trump will end the war in Ukraine; others point to more difficulties for immigrants at the border; and even those in Cuba who expect a different look from the rubicund towards the needs and squeezes in this Antillean archipelago stumble.
One thing is propaganda and electoral promises, and another when the aspiring candidate takes possession of the cake.
Whatever the scenario in the new Trump era, we Cubans already know how much this coppery man is capable of, and consequently we can only continue along the path of dignity and self-effort in defense of sovereignty, independence and national integrity.
From his previous mandate, Donald Trump bequeathed us more than 243 measures to tighten the economic blockade, the inclusion in the list of countries that sponsor terrorism, and a string of prohibitions that have contributed to the deterioration of the Cuban economy and to multiply the hardships and shortages of the people, whose only crime is to pretend to live in peace, under the socio-political system and the principles elected, also here, by the majority of the voters.
Those who are paralyzed and raise their hands towards the north in search of solutions to our current problems should be reminded, once again, of the words of the distinguished patriot and general Antonio Maceo Grajales, when in the Mambo struggle of the 19th century he warned us in time about the true essence and the dominant aspirations of Yankee imperialism.
From Spain I never expected anything,” said Maceo, ”they have always despised us, and it would be unworthy to think otherwise. Freedom is not begged for, it is conquered with the edge of the machete (…) Neither do I expect anything from the United States, it is preferable to rise or fall by our own efforts, than to contract debts of gratitude with such a powerful neighbor”. In each of the towns where the White House intervened, supposedly to defend the freedom and rights of the citizens, people today live worse than before that miraculous help. Let us Cubans never forget this detail.
