On August 29, 1956, Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Movimiento 26 de Julio, and José Antonio Echeverría, resident of the Federación de Estudiantes Universitarios (FEU) and head of the Directorio Revolucionario (DR), signed the Carta de México, a historic agreement of unity of political action against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista.
These organizations planned different ways of developing insurrectional actions, but they had in common «a program of social justice, freedom and democracy, respect for just laws and recognition of the full dignity of all Cubans»; this is confirmed by the text that the FEU Secretary General, Rene Anillo, brought hidden in his shoes from the Aztec capital to Havana.
The document signed by both revolutionary leaders, 30 and 24 years old respectively, was known as El Pacto de Mexico, in this pact they coordinated plans to take an expedition to Cuba and initiate guerrilla warfare in the mountains, and support the disembarkation through armed fight in different cities of the island, especially in the East, a mission that was given by the Movimiento 26 de Julio to Frank País García.
The meeting was characterized by the camaraderie of men willing to make any sacrifice in order to liberate their homeland and was of extraordinary importance, because it was established the unity of political action of the Cuban youth in the revolutionary struggle, in search of the definitive freedom of the Cuban people.
