Florida, Aug. 7 – The decrease in the birth rate continues as a phenomenon that is advancing very fast in the demographic statistics of the municipality of Florida; this is shown by the 203 births occurred in the territory up to the end of July, a figure lower by more than 100 children, if compared to 312 births registered in the same period of 2023.
Even though the statistics also refer to the historical decrease in the number of deaths among infants under one year of age during the same period, the concern increases considering the growing deficit in the natural replacement of the Floridian population.
According to the opinion of experts in demographic studies in Cuba, the decline in the fertility and birth rate curve is present in most of the country’s localities, and has as its main causes, among others, the changes in the traditional socio-cultural and economic pattern, including the incorporation of women in all spheres of life and the influence within Cuban families of the difficult economic situation of the nation for more than 30 years.
Consequently, it is up to the authorities in this municipality to develop multisectoral strategies and to enforce the State’s policies regarding the protection of pregnant women, working parents in the various sectors, and families responsible for the care of children, together with the assignation of houses to mothers with three or more children and attention to kindergartens, just to mention a few.
