Fidel’s imprint on Floridian lands (+Infographic)

Florida, Nov 25.- This day there are many Floridians who evoke the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, who on several occasions toured the territory, promoting economic and social development.

The Local History of Florida attests that on April 12, 1959, Fidel came to Camagüey to close the agrarian plenary session and in the morning, along with several collaborators, he moved to the old rice field of San Antonio, an area of about 1400 caballerías located south of the municipality, and after collecting the area, it established the first cooperative in the province dedicated to the cultivation of grain.

On February 10, 1960, the head of the Cuban Revolution visited San Antonio rice field for the second time, this time accompanied by the deputy prime minister of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Anastas Mikoyán and on an improvised stand with bags of rice, In front of the Libertad mill they spoke to the people and Fidel called on the farmers to produce more every day to improve the standard of living.

Some time later, on March 26, 1969, Fidel toured the province of Camagüey to assess the progress of the harvest that was ending and evaluate the preparations for the 1970 war; In the territory of Florida he met at the command post of the Directorate of Agriculture, in the old La Pérez Pérez school, a meeting where he assured the trust of Floridians.

Fidela’s last visit to this region of Camagüey took place on March 12, 1987, the date on which he officially inaugurated the Microdistrict Dental Clinic and the Soft Drink Factory; In the first of these centers he recommended extending the areas of care to the population and suggested the creation of a Prosthetics workshop to increase the efficiency of services.

With the curiosity that characterized him, at the Soft Drink Factory Fidel asked about the peculiarities of the entity, the installed capacity and the productive potential it had, and was also informed of the plans to begin the construction of the industry destined to the production of cookies.

Attracted by the presence of the Historical Leader of the Revolution, the residents of the two institutions inaugurated on March 12, 1987 gathered to greet him and he congratulated them on the new works that, without a doubt, would contribute to improving his quality of life.

According to what residents in this Camagüey region remember, there are four visits made by Fidel Castro Ruz to Florida; always linked with the clear intention of promoting the economic and social development of the region, where his presence is evoked and his imprint is revered seven years after his physical disappearance.
