The history of the Cuban Civil Defense is marked by the social commitment, courage and solidarity of women and men who responded to the call of the Homeland when they were needed to reduce disaster risks and save human lives.
Under heavy rains and strong winds, in the midst of floods and electrical storms, Cuban men and women have marched with humanism and altruism to evacuate people who face danger and to protect the assets of the nation’s economy.
In all these years, the Cuban people have witnessed and benefited from how, despite the country’s economic limitations, the leadership of the State does not skimp, nor does it hesitate, in mobilizing the resources and forces available to guarantee the fulfillment of the missions of the Civil defense and safeguard human life against the occurrence of natural or technological disasters.
The current times demand new challenges in terms of risk reduction, due to the effects of climate change that cause increasingly intense natural phenomena and the current complex economic situation that limits access to technologies and resources for the development of preventive actions with greater systematicity.
In the same way, the US blockade against Cuba limits the ability of this people to protect themselves and achieve greater well-being, but, despite these limitations, we can achieve much more in terms of prevention if from the neighborhood the majorities come to understand the importance of maintaining ditches and canals are dredged and cleaned, to name just one example.
In the Cuban Civil Defense system, risk reduction plans must be permanently contextualized, the operation of early warning systems optimized at the territory level and the greatest possible efficiency achieved in each preventive, protection or rescue task. and salvage.
This force may be strengthened to the extent that a greater number of people willing to carry the banners of social commitment and solidarity of the Revolution are trained, to safeguard human life and protect the assets of the country’s economy against any disaster situation.
