Florida, Jul 21.- The municipality of Florida remains among the territories of the province of Camagüey, and of the country, with the highest rate of pregnancy in adolescence, an indicator that complicates the gestation process and affects the survival and quality of life of the mother and the newborn.
At the end of the first quarter of the current year, more than 60 pregnant women under the age of two decades were registered, including six under 15 years of age.
The most common risks of pregnancy in adolescence include the poor evolution of the fetus and the mother, vaginal infections, prematurity, low birth weight, complications at the time of delivery, malnutrition, the presence of diseases such as high blood pressure, and maternal or newborn deaths, among others.
The effort of the Public Health system in its objective of curbing the growth of this phenomenon in Florida must be strongly joined by the family, the school and the rest of the social institutions to raise awareness about the danger of early initiation of unprotected sexual relations.
It is the responsibility of parents, teachers and other social actors, including the media, to educate children and young people on sexual and reproductive health issues and to explain, as often as necessary, how harmful the voluntary interruption of pregnancy and childbirth is at ages under 20 years of existence.
Even though Cuba is one of the countries with population decreases from the decrease in the birth rate in the last decade, it is not, nor can it ever be, the policy of the State and the Government to solve this problem, endangering the health, well-being and life projects of the new generations.
