Florida, Sep 12.- The new Family Code proposed for the Referendum on September 25 constitutes a fundamental weapon in the defense of the dignity and rights of older adults and those who live with disabilities.
This is confirmed in its content by the new norm when it states that elderly people have the right to a dignified and active family life, with the family being the main party responsible for attending to their needs in the affective and patrimonial order, and they must also respect their privacy, communication and links with the rest of the relatives.
When the majority of Floridians say Yes to all the provisions of the already recognized Code of Affections, they will also be reinforcing the right of grandparents and grandparents to live autonomously and independently, free from discrimination and violence, to choose the place of residence and have an accessible environment, with the necessary support to develop a full and healthy life, among other prerogatives.
The Family Code endorses almost a dozen articles referring to the rights of people with disabilities and the duties assumed by relatives, social institutions and the State in their protection, support and realization of life projects.
Cuba is among the oldest countries in the South American region, and by 2030 it is forecast that nearly 25 percent of its population will be over 60 years old, hence the importance of protecting in the new Family Code the older adults and people living with disabilities.
