Florida, Jan. 29 – The burning of some 800 tons of sugar cane was the result of a fire that occurred in areas of the Unidad Básica de Producción Cooperativa (UBPC) Primero de Enero, in the municipality of Florida, where the main task, from now on, must be the active surveillance to prevent the repetition of this phenomenon.
According to the account of the entity’s directors, the fire spread from a fire that advanced from neighboring lands and multiplied in the sugarcane fields after circumventing the containment barriers, taking advantage of the strong winds and the deficient availability of water in the area to suffocate it.
The prevailing drought in the current stage and the abundance of combustible material in pastures and areas adjacent to roads and highways constitute a potential risk when talking about unscheduled fires, and therefore it is necessary to be alert and enforce the control and prevention measures established for the sugar system.
During the previous harvest, around 30 indiscriminate burnings in sugarcane plantations were reported in the municipality of Florida, which caused alterations in the cutting schedule, economic and raw material losses in the production units and deterioration in the composition and useful life of the sugarcane vines.
