World Red Cross Day celebrated in Florida

Florida, May 8 – In a social context impacted by armed conflicts and other situations of violence, disasters, climate crises, epidemics, food insecurity and massive displacements, the volunteers of the municipality of Florida join their voices to the concert that commemorates this May 8 the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a humanitarian institution created by Henry Dunant more than 160 years ago.

The Red Cross branch was created in Florida in 1945 and was initially directed by Gerardo Arencibia Milian, who was recognized as president of the Municipal Committee and head of Brigade No. 45.

Currently, the Florida Red Cross branch is made up of some 250 men and women who voluntarily participate in various activities and receive systematic training to attend to the actions of the different fronts of the institution, among which stand out Instruction and Special Programs, in addition to community preparedness projects to minimize the risks of disasters.

Other work fronts that require the actions of this institution in Florida are related to aquatic safety, international humanitarian law, social communication, humanitarian aid and the formation of young people and adolescents, through interest circles in different schools.

The work carried out in this municipality by the operations and relief groups of the city of Florida and the rural community of San Geronimo, and the training actions offered by technicians and volunteers to enhance the capabilities of the population living in vulnerable areas and mitigate risks in cases of natural or technological disasters, are fundamental.

On this World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, the Red Cross Red Crescent remains committed to continue supporting governmental action aimed at serving the community and preserving, above all, human life.
