Florida sugarcane researchers seek to maintain experimentation cycles (+Photo)

Florida, April 5 – The Florida provincial unit of the National Sugarcane Research Institute (INICA) expects to harvest more than 550 tons of sugarcane during the current sugarcane harvest, of which some 100 tons have already been sent to the industry of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes sugar mill.

Although this figure is not a high production volume, it is vital for the entity to complete the cutting of its plantations in the current stage and to maintain the experimentation cycles with sugarcane varieties in this scientific institution.

Engineer Raúl Melián Cosío, INICA’s provincial director of Logistics and Administration, together with technician Carlos Padilla Martínez, coordinator of the Fertilizer Recommendation Service, commented to the press on the need to harvest in time to be able to analyze the behavior of the sugarcane varieties that are then sent to the registered seed banks located in the Camagüey agro-sugar companies.

The specialists of the Sugarcane Research Center in this municipality of Florida also highlighted the soundness of the different services they provide to sugar sector producers, including proposals for the promotion of clones and the control of weeds, pests and diseases.

The entity’s lands, located on the outskirts of the town of San Emilio, also grow various crops such as cassava, bonito and corn, mainly for the self-consumption of its workers.
