Florida, August 8.- Since last Friday, August 1st, World Breastfeeding Week has been taking place in the municipality of Florida. An educational talk was given to pregnant and nursing mothers in the waiting room of the Concepción Agramonte Bousa polyclinic in the area. The aim was to inform them about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding their children.
At the meeting, ProSalud specialists reported on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and complementary breastfeeding until the age of two, which enables healthy growth and strengthens the newborn’s cognitive and immunological development.
Cuba approved a resolution to protect breastfeeding and regulate Human Milk Banks, Decree Law 84, effective since 2024, which extends maternity leave until the baby is 15 months old, allowing mothers to spend more time with their children and offer them natural nutrition on a sustained basis.
The activities carried out these days are part of an initiative promoted by the World Alliance for Action on Breastfeeding (WABA), which seeks to promote this essential practice for children’s health and the emotional bond between mother and child.
In Florida, the activities carried out in both health areas and in Family Physician and Nurse Practitioner Offices include workshops for healthcare professionals, community meetings, and informational campaigns on the radio and social media. The primary objective is to raise community awareness and provide family support to ensure the sustainability of the actions that support mothers in this crucial process.
