Fidel, a Centenary with a Lone Star

Florida, March 24 – It would seem that some want to kill Fidel in the year of his Centenary; such is the affront launched against his people in this supreme hour of dangers and threats.

Today more than ever, imperialism is determined to destroy the work of his Revolution; today, as never before, a torrent of poison flows from the belly of the monster, and its bloodied claws desperately seek to seize the lone star, overthrow the Cuban constitutional order, and stain the peace and harmony won on the basis of the courage and sacrifice of millions of compatriots.

It is undoubtedly painful to know that some unnatural sons of this land, along with others with the soul of Judas, sitting at our own table, lend their words and their lack of conscience to fuel discord, outrage, and ingratitude toward the very nation that fed them, protected them, and provided them with opportunities to face life.

The Cuba that surrounds us today is not the one Fidel dreamed of, that much is true: there are shortages of supplies and electricity; there are too many ugly places, garbage in the streets, and disregard for the law. Differences between people are growing, and dissatisfaction is multiplying.

Unproductivity, indiscipline, and selfishness are festering in certain corners; government services are weakening, and morale and commitment are eroding in offices where exemplary dignity and daily dedication should be the norm.

We say this with courage: it seems as if Fidel, his glorious example, and his political testament could succumb in the year of his Centenary, when the truth is being obscured by disinformation, memes, and lies that arrive from abroad and spread through cyberspace.

One might think that the Moncada Barracks could once again become a haven for torture when those responsible for promoting and leading strategic battles in these times are afraid to walk alongside their people and forget that the voice of history, as the shield and sword of the homeland, is the best weapon to defend it.

It seems as if the Granma yacht is sinking into the abyss of ingratitude every time our people, mistakenly and dangerously, blame our own government and President Miguel Díaz-Canel for committing a genocide perpetrated by other criminals and haters, lurking in the turbulent and brutal north, surrounded by mercenaries and pro-annexationists.

Perhaps they risk forgetting the epic of the Sierra Maestra and the Battle of Girón when the drive to rally the masses, to inspire them, and to fully participate in the daily struggles to overcome difficulties and safeguard the independence and justice won, wanes.

It would seem, in short, that Fidel could soon be crushed by the boot of the Empire in the year of his Centennial; that his legacy will be extinguished forever amidst a turbulent world, anesthetized by cultural neocolonialism and the ambition of the most powerful, as he himself so often warned.

All this may seem true, my people; but let no one be under any illusions, neither here nor there: Fidel will never die! He lives, and will live forever in the hearts and heroic resistance of millions of Cubans and friends around the world!

His people are rebellious, his people are dignified, his people are faithful to his memory; there are thousands upon thousands of men and women willing to die defending his doctrines and his convictions.

Fidel will live as long as there is a doctor forged by the Revolution fighting for the health of the people amidst shortages and limitations; as long as there is a teacher, heir to the epic literacy campaign, building the future of our children; As long as there are guaranteed pensions for the grandparents who are currently crowding in front of banks to cash their checks because of the selfishness of a few.

It will live on in the mother with a guaranteed birth; in the infant protected here by 13 vaccines; in the farmer who owns the land; and in those who know that «freedom is not begged for, it is defended with the edge of the machete.»

We reiterate this today with the same words with which yesterday, the same Fidel we proclaim, honored the Apostle alongside the Centennial Generation; if the storms of hatred and vengeance were to cross borders to tarnish the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution, there are young people, the elderly, combatants, and even children who, in magnificent redress, would go to die beside his stone and steel tomb in Santa Ifigenia.

They would march to offer their blood and their lives so that he may continue to live in the soul of the Homeland and its people; they would fall with pride in combat so that Cuba may remain a beacon of freedom, solidarity, and humanism in Latin America and throughout the world.

What would become of us if we were to let Fidel die in the year of his centennial, when he himself demonstrated that the path of heroism, sovereignty, survival, and victory is built on a single slogan: Homeland or Death, We Shall Overcome!
