May, 2025. – On May 30, 1947, with the participation of intellectual, workers and political personalities with links and ideas of the revolutionary and progressive left, such as the communist leaders Flavio Bravo, Juan Marinello and Lázaro Peña, the professor Vicentina Antuña, the wise Don Fernando Ortiz and the writer Enrique Labrador Ruiz, the Cuban United Nations Association was created, a non-governmental, non-profit organization, the wise Don Fernando Ortiz and the writer Enrique Labrador Ruiz is created the Cuban Association of the United Nations, a non-governmental, non-profit organization, which brings together on a voluntary basis to natural and legal persons, genuinely interested in knowing and participating in the management of the United Nations.
The association, which was the first of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean, backs Cuba’s independence and sovereignty and supports the path undertaken for the nation’s economic development, and among the institutions with which it relates are some 63 medical societies on the Island, the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation, and religious organizations such as the Council of Churches and the Quisicuaba Cabildo, which offer a broad vision of what is happening in the largest Antillean republic.
Among the first actions carried out by the Cuban Association of the United Nations was the collection of funds for the purchase of sugar for women, children and elderly victims of the famine that devastated Europe after the end of World War II.
It is important to note that although it was born among the intelligentsia, after the triumph of the Revolution the association continued to incorporate prestigious associations and institutions within society, scientific and academic centers that contribute to promoting Cuba’s foreign policy.
