Two cases of Oropouche virus infestation reported in Florida

Florida, June 5 – The municipality of Florida reported the first two cases of infestation by the Oropouche virus, a rapid febrile disease that affects humans and is transmitted by the bite of Culex and culicoid mosquitoes.

These are two adults, female, belonging to the South Health area, in the Rolando Valdivia popular council; who, after visiting the province of Santiago de Cuba, arrived in Florida and, days later, presented symptoms and signs of suspected infection by arbovirosis.

It is important to point out that Santiago de Cuba and the province of Cienfuegos are the Cuban territories where, to date, positive events of Oropouche have been confirmed.

After the clinical evaluation of the two citizens and after ruling out the presence of dengue due to negative immunoglobulin, the Municipal Health Group was immediately activated and the patients were admitted to the Manuel Piti Fajardo Hospital, where the control and medical assistance actions foreseen in the epidemiological confrontation protocols were carried out.

According to the information provided by Luis Manuel Lastres, Senior Technician and Chief Advisor of the Arbovirosis Program of the municipality of Florida, the patients maintained a favorable clinical evolution, and at this moment they are back in their homes with follow-up by the basic health team of the area of residence.

Also known by the acronym OROV, the Oropouche virus is characterized by fever of 38 degrees, muscular, joint and lumbar pain, as well as photophobia and hemorrhage, in more severe cases.

Since the diagnosis of the first two imported cases in the municipality of Florida, the recommendation of the Public Health System, in case of any of these symptoms, is to go immediately to the family doctor or to the nearest hospital in the area of residence. (Photo: almayadeen.net)
