Cuban Female Athlete Ortiz Leads Prensa Latina Survey

Havana, Dec 4 - Cuban judoka Idalys Ortiz led the Prensa Latina online survey today to choose the Best Female Athletes of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2013.

Ortiz, winner of the 78kg category at the Rio de Janeiro world championships and ranked second worldwide, has 174 votes (50.3 percent) of all 348 votes registered on the PL website.
Following her was Jamaican sprinter Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce (128 votes, 37 percent) and Colombian triple jumper Catherine Ibarguen (45 votes, 12 percent).
Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt led the voting for Best Male Athlete, with 49.5 percent of the more than 2,400 votes registered.
Bolt is followed by Argentinian soccer player Lionel Messi (29.7 percent) and Venezuelan baseball player Miguel Cabrera (20.8)
This survey, available to all Internet users at www.prensa-latina.cu, is running parallel to another that is organized annually by the agency, involving major international and regional news organizations (radio, television and print media).
At least 82 media organizations have cast their votes in that other survey, scheduled to conclude on Dec. 18, with Bolt winning as Best Male Athlete (54 votes), followed by Messi (11) and Cabrera (10.)
Jamaican Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce has received the most votes, holding 37, followed by Ibarguen (17) and Ortiz (five).
