Cuba Guarantees Full Access to Antiretroviral Therapy

Cuba Guarantees Full Access to Antiretroviral Therapy Havana, Dec 1 - All patients with AIDS in Cuba have full access to antiretroviral therapy, said Raul Valdes, national coordinator of the Hot Line to Support People with the Disease.

The expert told Prensa Latina that the national program of control and prevention of sexual transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS in Cuba include assistance, lab, research, epidemiological watch and awareness raising campaigns.

He said coverage to face the pandemic relies on the system of family doctor and nurse, community polyclinics and health care areas, as well as counselling on the issue, with actions from the primary level in all Public Health facilities countrywide.

Raising-awareness and training of people on the illness includes the Hot Line to Support People with HIV/AIDS, a program aimed at improving the quality of life of these persons by accompanying, training, supporting and empowering them.

He said the systematic use of condoms is promoted as an effective tool to prevent sexual transmitted infections, including the HIV/AIDS.

The world marks World AIDS Day today, and people around the planet join efforts to raise awareness on the illness and show their solidarity with patients suffering the pandemic.

There were 35.3 million people with AIDS worldwide in late 2012, including 2.1 million adolescents.

Some 10 million people were getting antiretroviral therapy that year in low and medium income countries.

At least 19 million patients do not have access now to antiretroviral drugs.
