Cuba will Have one of the Oldest Populations in the World

Cuba will Have one of the Oldest Populations in the WorldHavana, Nov 14  -  Cuba has one of the oldest populations in Latin America, and for 2050, it will have one of the oldest in the world, according to reports released today.

About 18.3 percent of Cubans, 2,041,392 older adults, are more than 60 years old, according to the National Population and Housing Census, conducted in October last year, whose data are reported now.

The low birth rate and the increasing life expectancy are the main causes of the aging population in the island, the head of the Senior Citizens Department at the Ministry of Public Health, Alberto Fernandez Seco, told Granma newspaper.

Our country has a life expectancy of 78.97 years, 76 for men and 80 for women, the specialist said.

About this issue, he stressed that life expectancy of those who are 60, is 22 years more, and those who are 80, of about 8.8 years more.

Fernandez added that since 2010, Cuba has no replacement of productive forces, because the line of persons from 0 to 14 years old joined that of those who were 60.

From that point, the number of people with 60 years old increases, and the under 14-year-old group decreases, so the demographic scenario becomes more complex, he warned.

With such conditions, the country faces the challenge of paying attention to the phenomenon of aging, for which we are working to regain capacity and improve facilities for elderly care.
