Félix Varela, the forerunner of the Cuban identity awareness

On November 20, a man was born in Cuba who stood out for his revolutionary thought: Félix María de la Concepción Varela Morales, the illustrious presbyter who became one of the essential pillars in the genesis of the Cuban independence movement and in the irrevocable firmness of the patriotic feelings.

It is not possible to evoke Father Varela, without speaking of the unyielding revolutionary, the man who loved freedom as much as knowledge and culture; the man of democratic, anti-scholastic and advanced scientific thought, who began to expose his ideas in a period in which the influence of the revolts against Napoleonic domination and the democratic ideas of North America is remarkable.

Bearer of a high sense of justice Félix Varela overcame the limitations of some previous figures in the history of Cuba that failed to radicalize; Because of his great Christian sensibility, his culture and his knowledge, he assumed freedom in its highest expression, rejected slavery and called to fight for national independence.

A distinguished pedagogue of his time, Varela embraced the most advanced ideas of his time, advocated the birth of the Cuban nation, through the elimination of slavery and excision of colonialism, and instilled in his disciples the ideal of freedom, equality , social justice and human dignity, the love of freedom and country.

With justice he is recognized as the forerunner in the formation of the consciousness of the Cuban identity, whose teachings endure in the collective memory of the nation.
