Havana, Nov. 8 - The young Cuban Kevin Galindo Hernández has faced death for most of his life. Today he is 16 years old, he is in eleventh grade at a pre-university in Pinar del RÃo city, he dreams of being a biologist, he loves video games and he already knows love.
His childhood ?: more difficult impossible. At 15 days old he was diagnosed with a rare disease and from there he began a life of care, scares, worries and fears.
Kevin is one of eight children in the province of Pinar del RÃo who suffers from hemophilia, a genetic disease that in his case is a spontaneous mutation because he has no family history. His condition consists in the deficit in the blood of the eighth factor, which governs coagulation.
At a young age Kevin suffered the appearance of frequent bruising, bleeding, admission to therapy ... Prolonged admission to the oncohematology room of the Pepe Portilla Pediatric Hospital, joint problems and difficulties in walking, which forced him to depend on a wheelchair, Until five years ago.
Medications to alleviate these symptoms are extremely expensive, as the US government's blockade policy slows access to the drug of choice (eighth factor) that has given hope back to Kevin, who spent ten years in bed and was the First Cuban child with prophylactic treatment to - as far as possible - stop bleeding from a disease that until now has no cure.
The blockade has caused pain in another Cuban family. They have been years of suffering and tension. Unworthy to know that foolishness tries to bend life. But in Cuba there is always hope; and for Kevin's family, trust is stronger than fear.
Kevin is already 16 years old. He is a tall young man with a white complexion, talking slowly and securely about his future. He loves natural sciences, dreams of being a biologist, moving forward and dedicating himself to scientific research.
