Cuba announces lineup for debut in Premier baseball tournament

Seoul, Nov. 5 - Cuba's manager Miguel Borroto announced today the offensive lineup and starting pitcher he will use for his debut against Canada at the start of group C of the Premier 12 baseball tournament.

In a press conference prior to the game, which will take place at noon in this capital (10:00 pm Caribbean time), at the Gocheok Sky Dome stadium, Borroto unveiled a 'line up' of men with Experience in international events.

The coach will place Roel Santos (CF), Erisbel Arruebarruena (SS), Yurisbel Gracial (RF), Alfredo Despaigne (BD), Frederich Cepeda (LF), Alexader Ayala (3B), Yordanis Samón (1B), Yosvani Alarcón (R) and César Prieto (2B).

They stand out Gracial in the line up, Most Valuable Player of the 2019 Japan Baseball Final Series, and Alfredo Despaigne, the player with the greatest cache in the group, as well as Cepeda, one of the all-time history, and Prieto, just 20 years and only natural left-hander of the batch.

Borroto announced that the right Carlos Juan Viera was chosen as the ace of the rotation, something that changes the script of recent years, when Cuban mentors always used serpentineros of the so-called 'wrong hand' before the payrolls of that northern nation .

After several seasons away from the National Baseball Series, Viera returned this year to the largest of the Antilles, was the number one pitcher of his provincial team Las Tunas, reached positive record of wins and losses and stamped a record of 61 strikeouts for a first tournament phase

"Cuba comes to show a dynamic, creative game with a lot of tactical discipline," Borroto told reporters in the company of his counterparts David Nilsson (Australia), Kyungmoon Kim (Surcorea) and Ernie Whitt (Canada). Whitt announced as an initiator the also right-handed Phillippe Aumont, another who has experience with the coat of the silver medalist country in 2019 at the Pan American Championships in Lima, when the Caribbean island had the worst result in its history, at the end of sixth place.

In addition to the Cuba vs. Canada duel, the day will bring about the clash between Australia, Olympic subcampion in Athens 2004, and South Korea, monarch of the first edition of Premier 12, in 2015.

According to the competition system, the two best teams will advance to the Super Round, scheduled to take place in Japan, from November 11 to 16, at Tokyo Dome, while the final will be on Sunday 17, at the ZOZO Marine Stadium , from the city of Chiba.

The baseball program, which brings together the first 12 nations in the ranking of the World Baseball and Softball Confederation in three groups, will grant a place for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the best team in the Asia and Oceania area and another to the main team of America.
