UN Calls to Reform World Financial Architecture

UN Calls to Reform World Financial ArchitectureUnited Nations, Apr 8 - The United Nations Undersecretary General Amina Mohammed on Friday called to reform the world financial architecture; otherwise, the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development may not be achieved.

Based on statistics from the latest report on financing sustainable development, the high UN official warned that the challenges to deal with issues like poverty are increasing.

She noted that more national and international actions are needed at a time when multilateralism is being questioned and climate change threatens sustainable development.

Therefore, she added, the report contains recommendations to fight climate change and growing inequalities.

According to the report, published on Thursday, the rapid technological, geopolitical and climatic changes notably affect the economies, societies and institutions that struggle to adjust to the new contest.

Although the data show an increase in interest rates associated to sustainable development, greenhouse gas emissions rose 1.3 percent in 2017.

In addition, investments in several countries have decreased and 30 developing countries face high risks or are already going through financial difficulties due to their high debts.

Inequality continues to grow and if the national and international financial systems are not renovated, the governments all over the world will fail to fulfill their commitments, including the key challenges of fighting climate change and eradicating poverty by 2030, the report adds.

In addition to exposing those problems, the report contains a roadmap for the countries to renew their public and private financial system in order to mobilize resources for sustainable investments.

For example, it points out that in order to change the current trend in financing sustainable development, getting additional investments is not enough, because the entire system has to be transformed.

In that regard, the report refers to the need to renovate the sovereign debt agreements, the international fiscal standards, the multilateral trade system and the concentration of the market.(Prensa Latina)
