National Congress on History Begins in CamagüeyCuba april 25 - With the attendance of prominent scholars, among whom are the National History Award winners Eduardo Torres Cuevas, Francisca López Civeira, Olga Portuondo, Pedro Pablo Rodríguez and Ibrahim Hidalgo, the city of Camagüey hosts the 21st National Congress on History where discussions on matters of great interest are being held.

 

This important meeting was summoned as part of the actions taken in Cuba to mark the 500th anniversary of the island’s first seven villages and the 55th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

In a press conference, the head of the National Association of Cuban Historians (UNHIC) Roberto Pérez Rivero, Ph.D., told reporters that the participants in this congress will center their discussions on the 64 papers that have been collected throughout the country.

Among the contexts that will be brought to the table it is worth to note those dealing with the historiography surrounding the foundation of the first Spanish settlements and villages, especially the preservation of their heritage.

In addition, there are papers on nationalism, anti-imperialism and socialism in our history; as well as on slavery, racism and national integration, meanwhile the fourth thematic line is about the Cuban Revolution in power.

These meetings among Cuban historians began in 1942 and sought to promote the research, the teaching and the popularization of this discipline.
