Cuban Prima Ballerina Encourages New Spaces for Youth

Cuban Prima Ballerina Encourages New Spaces for Youth Havana, Apr 7 - The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) should be a space for encouraging inter-generational dialogue and different branches of the arts, says prima ballerina Viengsay Valdes, first-time delegate to the Congress of that organization.

For young dancers, the UNEAC may be a good place to foster discussions and learn about new trends. Ignoring the new impedes an artist's growth, said Valdes on the "Dialogue Dialogue" television program broadcast last night.

In this prelude to the discussions scheduled for the Congress, Valdes proposed reactivating competitions to find new talent, as a way to bring them into the organization of Cuban artists.

"The youth are restless and impatient, but we let them experiment and make mistakes while learning. We must support those who are starting out, offer them leadership, a voice and confidence," she said.

Valdes also recognized the high quality of dancers trained in the Cuban school of ballet: "Their style is recognizable anywhere in the world, their outgoing manner, their endless desire for virtuosity, their use of technique to move and reach the viewer, to go beyond the expected," she added.

Viengsay Valdés joined the National Cuban Ballet at a very young age and at only 18 years of age performed the black swan pas de deux in the company's Swan Lake ballet. She said she was deeply appreciative of the opportunity given her at the beginning of her career.

Now, she will perform as a delegate at the Congress of the UNEAC, the Cuban organization that brings together artists throughout all disciplines. The Congress is scheduled to be held next Friday and Saturday.
