Havana Hosts Workshop on U.S. Base in Guantanamo

Havana, Oct 31Â -Â Domestic and foreign specialists are debating today about the implications of the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo, in southeastern Cuba, which the island's authorities considered illegal and harmful to their right to national sovereignty.

Convened by the Cuban Institute of History, the workshop "110 years of the naval base in Guantanamo" will discuss the U.S. military presence on the island from the historical, political, legal, diplomatic, and aesthetic perspectives.
Among the guests to the meeting are Jonathan Hansen, U.S. researcher at Harvard University and author of the book "Guantanamo: una historia americana" (Guantanamo:An American Story).
Hansen's speech in the event is aimed at providing an overview about the current status of the base and its influence in the Cuban and American people for more than one century.
Original documents of treaties Washington imposed since early 20th century to Cuba, occupied by U.S. troops, as a condition for granting it independence formally, will be presented today.
