Cuba Starts Campaign Against Polio Havana, Mar 2 - More than half a million Cuban children will receive from the March 7 the oral vaccine that protects against polio, national media reported this weekend.

According to the newspaper Granma, the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba reported that in the first six days more than 380 thousand under three years old will receive the initial dose of vaccine.

During the second stage of this national immunization campaign, from April 25 to May 1, 119 000 899 nine year old children will take the recovery dose.

According to the publication, in the period between 1962 and 2013 the country has enabled the implementation of more than 83 million doses of polio vaccine, which allows protection of the population under 68 years.

Previous studies argue that Polio is a viral disease caused by infection with the poliovirus, which can affect nerves and can lead to partial or total paralysis.

Granma Cuba recalled that in 1962 became the first Latin American country to be declared free of the disease.
