Cuban Judo Goes for Success in Paris Tournament

Paris, Feb 8 - The Cuban delegation hopes to have good results in the Grand Slam Paris-2014 of Judo running at Palais Omnisport in Bercy, said Rafael Manso, president of the Cuban judo federation. In remarks to Prensa Latina, the sports official noted this is an event of top quality, attended by the best athletes from around the world.
Most judo powers like Japan, Mongolia, Russia and South Korea brought two fighters in each category while the hosts registered four, said Manso.
Cuba has brought four women judo fighters and five men to this event.
In the first fights today, Brazilian Sarah Menezes (48 kg) was beaten by French Amandine Buchard.
Also in the 48 kg, Cubans Dayanis Mestre and Maria Celia Laborde won and passed to quarter finals.
The Cuban female athletes came from Belgium, where they had also excelled in a tournament in Arlon, where they were second after France with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze, said Manso.
This year the schedule is busy because after France they will participate in the Grand Prix of Germany on Feb 23-24.
In late February-early March they will have the national championship in Santiago de Cuba and later we will have a qualifier in Barbados for the Central American Games of Veracruz, Mexico.
Asked about the development of judo in Latin America and the Caribbean, Manso said that the most advanced countries are Brazil and Cuba.
The two-day Grand Slam Paris-2014 opened today with 600 competitors from 80 countries.
