Feb. 4 - Jean Victor Geneus, ambassador of the Republic of Haiti to Cuba, expressed his gratitude for the disinterested aid offered by Cuba to his country, on the occasion on Monday of the 110th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Before canceling a postage stamp to mark the date, Geneus recalled that the two countries share history culture and a solid friendship that dates back to the 19th century when, after achieving independence (in 1804), Haiti cooperated with the struggles of emancipation of the region.
He recalled that in spite of economic difficulties, Cuba maintains since 1998 the presence of medical staff in his country, and that hundreds of Haitian youngsters have graduated as physicians and health specialists in Cuba, as well as in other areas.
Cuba’s commitment to the poorest nation in the region is also expressed in key sectors for development, like agriculture and the sugar and iron and steel industries, and in the spheres of education and sports.
Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra recalled that the rebelliousness of Haitians two centuries ago encouraged the pro-independence feeling of Cubans, which found refuge and support in that nation, and ratified the commitment of maintaining cooperation with that country.
Also present at the Foreign Ministry were the Deputy Minister of Communications, Manuel Martinez and representatives of organizations and institutions of the Cuban government and State and members of the diplomatic corps of the Caribbean accredited to Cuba.
The cancelled postage stamp shows the coats of arms of the two republics, which rest upon their respective nations as a reflection of their geographic and historic proximity.
