HAVANA, Oct 28 - Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez is in New York to participate at a new UN General Assembly's vote on Tuesday of a Cuban resolution demanding the lifting of the over-50-year US economic, commercial and financial blockade of the island.
According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Cuban foreign minister arrived early on Monday in New York, where he was welcomed by the island's permanent representative at the UN Rodolfo Reyes.
Minister Rodriguez is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly's plenary session, which will be attended by all 193 member states. The international community forum has overwhelmingly backed the Cuban resolution for 21 years in a row.
The Cuban resolution to be submitted to the assembly demands the lifting of the US siege on Cuba, whose damage has been estimated at one trillion 157 billion dollars, with very serious social impact on Cuban society, particularly on the health sector.
The Assembly is expected to again support the Cuban resolution this year given the strong criticism around the world agaisnt the US's hostile Cuba policy.
The rejection of the US blockade was high on the agenda of the most recent high-level debate at the UN General Assembly, held September 24 to October 1. On that occasion, over 40 heads of state addressed the necessity to lift the US measure, while several of them described the blockade as illega, unfair and relic of the Cold War era.
A large number of countries and UN agencies addressed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon a letter on their considerations about the unilateral US measure.Â
